How long did it take you to learn Italian in a university?

Spanish and Italian are very similar – i’m an Italian native speaker and it took me just a couple of months to master Spanish pretty well, especially because the phrase/clause construction is almost identical and there are plenty of words in common (especially those of latin-greek origins).
Of course there are some exceptions (for instance, irregular verbs can be tough sometimes), but i’m sure it won’t be a big deal.
You could also try this book: "De una a cuatro lenguas" by Schmidely, Ezquerra, Gonzàlez (ed. Arco Libros), which points out and explains the relationship and the main differences between the four most important romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French): i found it very helpful and interesting!
