Just because I'm Italian.?
Guys, I have a problem... Since i was a a kid... 6 years-old maybe, when people know that I'm italian, they come with that shit talking: "Bon giorno bambino" " Do you like pizzas and spaguetti?" " Mama mia", they start shakeing their hands up and forth, or they ask me to say something in Italian language. I'm not 17, and I've been hearing this shit talking and steoreotypes way too long... Pizza = Italy? Wrong............ there's also canneloni, lasagna .. spaguetti, not every italians talk shakeing their hands, and not every italians are fat, and not every italians work to mafia... Wtf, what shall I do? Hear the comments and continue the talking or punch them in the face? It's annoying still hearing it after 17 years... but i'm still proud of beeing italian, of course (Btw, I don't live in Italia, but in US)

Well I’m British and I live in Italy and I have to put up with….Ah English girl….free love yes,,,!BTW it’s spelt Spaghetti, just like in Italian!
Again, it is what the media tells us. Unless one lives in a predominantly Italian neighborhood and can observe for themselves first-hand, this is the image the comes to mind. Sad isn’t it?
Not every Italian works in the mafia? *gasps* This is news to me!
But seriously, just ignore it. At least they are not criticizing you. They are just ignorant of your culture.
I think it just shows how ignorant our society is becoming.
If these are people that you are just meeting – they could be trying to find common ground with you…. It’s almost like when someone finds out that I am from Texas they assume I have a horse, gun and 1,000 acre ranch.
I would suggest letting it roll off of your back – or you could poke fun at them – start doing the sterotypical Italian stuff that they are asking you about. It might come across as jerky and it might deter some people, but I am sure it will make them cognisant of what they are doing.
Good Luck – I understand how much this stinks
yep sounds very similar…I have exactly the same problem, see I’m half german and lived in germany till I was 11 and when i moved to england, people were all like taking the mick outta me and having a laugh and i was pretty much bullied my whole childhood, even though i was like proper english..
but anyway….people (well most people) will mature and they don’t really say much about it anymore, like when i tell people i am half german now, they think its pretty cool, that im from a different culture.
i dont think that people are trying to make fun of you, the italian culture is very well known and i think sometimes you have to take a little stick when you enter a society where not everyone is the same as you.
There is stereo types on all culture like people that live down in the south of the USA and they go up to new york city people start talking like hay all do yall want some BBQ and for the African American people assume that all blacks like fried chicken and watermelon well I tell you what I am white and I like fried chicken and watermelon and it goes on and on If they have an accent start talking like them or say I don’t like that please don’t do it aging or if you don’t like the person smack them up side there head and say do you like that accent
